Taking pictures for Etsy

When it comes to attracting customers to your shop, you want to make sure your first impression is a good one. It’s easy to get overwhelmed with finding the perfect location, the perfect model, etc., but taking beautiful product photos doesn’t have to be complicated! These are a few of the things we do to make sure our photos get people interested.

Show your product being used! You want people to envision your product in their own event, home, wedding, whatever it may be! For us, our biggest hits have been photos displaying our products at actual weddings around the world. It’s easier for someone to catch that vision if they see it in action.

Take clear, high quality photos. If you have access to a DSLR, use that. If all you have is your smart phone, you’re still in good hands! We take product photos with our iPhones ALL the time. They’re small, convenient and you always have them with you! The key to taking photos with either a high quality camera or a smart phone is to make sure your photos come out in focus. Always review photos before concluding your photo session to ensure you don’t come home to blurry photos!

Make sure you have sufficient lighting, whether shooting indoors or outdoors. We LOVE using natural light, so most of our pictures are taken outdoors. AVOID direct sunlight when possible and use shade to your advantage. That sunset may be beautiful, but too much light will leave your beautiful product in the dark! Our favorite time to shoot outdoors is early morning or an hour or two before sunset when the light is a little softer.

Backgrounds can often make or break the image you’re looking for! Distracting backgrounds will take the focus away from your product and will have customers trying to figure out what’s going on in your photo. We aim for simple backgrounds like brick walls, open fields and cement walls. Don’t be afraid of looking for amazing backdrops, just make sure it compliments your product.

Product photos can be your best friend or your worst enemy when it comes to attracting customers on Etsy. With so many options out there, you need to create a vision that customers can latch on to and make their own. Following these tips will help get you closer to reaching your goals with selling on Etsy!
